Along the course

Where the field flew

Each 5 km of the course: the share of the field's progress there made in the air, among the athletes who got there. The dips are the stretches the race was walked.

How each kilometre was won

One row per athlete, in the order of the results; each 5 km of the course coloured by how the athlete covered it, measured as progress toward goal (circling makes none). A column of green is a stretch the field walked; a blue cell in it, someone who flew it. The ticks mark where each day ended.

Along the clock

How each hour was spent

The field's row, then one per athlete, in the order of the results; each hour coloured by what the athlete spent most of it doing. A column of one colour is the field doing the same thing at once: the climb, a flying window, the packing after it.

Time budget

Every tracked second of the race in one bucket: hiking (moving on foot), flying, launch prep, packing and stops of 2 min or more. Nights off the tracker are not in it. In the order of the results. Click an activity in the legend or the table to sort by it: most time first, then least, then back to this order.

Derived from the GPS tracks with the classifier's limits; see the definitions below. Progress runs along the optimised route via the turnpoints, a little shorter than the official one; the official results stay on the results page.

How these are measured

A multi-day race has no task per day, so there are no splits, turnpoint landings or legs here. How a track becomes hiking, flying and stops is on the site's about page.

  • The whole race adds every tracked day up. The climb rate and the flight leverage are weighted back over the days rather than averaged; packing and launch prep are averages over at least five flights.
  • Climb rate: ascent per hour on the climbing stretches of the hikes only (60 s windows gaining at least 3 m per minute), so a ridge walk or a descent does not dilute it.
  • Distance flown: the XC distance of every flight, as for the flight leverage below; the share flown compares the tracks in the air and on foot, and the progress flown is the share of the progress toward goal (below) made in the air, where circling on the spot makes none.
  • Flight leverage: metres flown per metre climbed on foot. A flight counts for its XC distance: the longest line from a start through up to three turnpoints to a finish, all on the track in flight order, each leg at least 500 m so that an S-turn or the landing pattern adds nothing. It turns back only at a turnpoint of the race or over legs of 3 km, so a beat along a ridge adds nothing either. The track itself counts every thermal circle, one and a half to two and a half times as far.
  • Packing and launch prep: measured by displacement. Packing runs from touchdown until the athlete is 50 m from the landing spot; launch prep is the time spent within 50 m of the launch point before takeoff, which includes waiting for a cycle.
  • Progress is measured along the optimised route: the kilometres of route covered per hour hiking or flying (rests and nights do not count), and the best single day. Each day has its own view, led by the kilometres gained that day. The time budget's progress view splits it by activity: only new ground counts, so ground lost and regained counts once. How each kilometre was won tells it per 5 km of the route, each coloured by the share of it flown, or by the hiking efficiency of the kilometres walked.
  • How each hour was spent: the race in hours, each coloured by what the athlete spent most of it doing, or by itsnet gain: how much nearer goal the athlete ended it, as a speed. Unlike progress, ground lost counts against it, so time spent going backwards shows red. The shaded hours are the night, when flying is forbidden.
  • Hiking efficiency: the progress made on foot over the distance walked; 100 % is a straight line to the next turnpoint. It asks for 2 km on foot.
